Notes designed to make you better.

A full developmental read of your screenplay. Every page marked up as I react to it, considered notes written after I’ve slept on the whole story, and an hour on Zoom that’s yours to spend however you like.

The Moment You’re In

Your script only gets one first impression.

You’ve done it! You’ve finished your script! But you’ve been in it so long you can’t see the forest for the trees. Your writer friends say it’s good...but did they really read it? Are they just being nice? You don’t know.

Now, every time you send it out, you’re spending a read you can’t get back: the contest entry, the manager you bumped into at St. Felix, the friend of a friend at the production company.

And underneath it all sits a question you can’t answer from the outside: how does your script actually stack up against the professional drafts circulating at studios? I’ll tell you.

You want to make it count. You want to be taken seriously. Even better, you want to get it made. That’s where I come in.

What You Get

Two documents and a working session.

The Deep Dive comes in three parts. Each one earns its own look.

In-Line Markup

Your full script, marked up directly as I read it for the first time.

Color-coded highlights on story notes, formatting, cuts, and the questions I’m asking as I read. Alongside personal emotional reactions (i.e. “She did NOT!!!”).

You watch a professional reader move through your pages beat by beat.

And if there’s something in particular you want me to look out for, like cutting it down, combining characters, or reducing budget, I’ll do that too.

The in-script notes were written during her first read-through, which gave a lot of insight into how someone reading for the first time feels every step of the way.

Considered Notes

Once the initial read is done, I take it on a walk. I sleep on it. I give it time to digest.

What you get are notes 100% custom to you, written after everything settles, based on what you and your story need.

What’s working. What isn’t, and why. Comparables, market positioning, and the top five things to tackle, ordered by leverage.

8 to 10 pages. Sometimes more.

She went in-depth on theme, symbolism, character relationships, and more.

Debrief

We get an hour together on Zoom within two weeks of delivery.

You read your notes first. Then we talk them through: ask questions about anything that didn’t land, test-run solutions, or just talk next steps for getting it out there.

Reviewers overwhelmingly say this call is the best part of the experience.

The zoom call! Kate is easy to talk to. And she listens.

A Small Warning

My notes are not for the faint of heart. The goal is positive constructive development. These are not political studio notes softened to protect ego and delicate relationships. These are notes designed to make you better.

If you are looking for someone to pat you on the back, fluff your ego and tell you everything is perfect the way it is, this will not be the right fit for you.

Kate's detailed deep dive cuts to the bone of your script. If your bones don't stand up on their own, you aren't going to walk very far.

The Philosophy

I’m just going to be direct and tell you what I think.

I might be tough, but let’s be clear: my goal is NEVER to tear you down.

My goal is to lift you up to the highest possible version you and your script can be, while taking into consideration the market it has to live in and the career you’re building.

I don’t do grades, rubrics, or pass/consider/recommend. Each script earns fully customized feedback, and a plan for getting you there.

See It First

Every piece of coverage is unique, but it all starts with the same template. Don’t worry, I won’t ask for your email. Go ahead. Take a look.

Your Reader

I read 60 to 80 scripts a year.

I read for boutique literary management companies representing Emmy-winning writers. I was the person who read what came in and decided whether the writer earned a meeting.

Now I read for you.

My coverage clients include published authors, staff writers, producers, and development executives. One has been optioned twice since we started working together, in one of the toughest climates the entertainment industry has ever seen.

Nearly all of my clients come back for more.

I've had coverage before, but with nowhere near the level of care and diligence Kate offers.

First Time Here?

Start with a conversation.

If we haven’t talked before, a free consult is the best first move. 45 minutes on Zoom, no prep, no pitch. I get to know who you are, where you are in your career, and what you want this script to do. The read gets better when I know who I’m reading for.

Questions

The fine print.

The further along you are, the harder it is to find someone who'll push you. My coverage clients include published authors, working screenwriters, producers, and development execs. If people have stopped giving you notes that teach you anything, that's the ceiling this is built for.

Whatever you need it to be. Some clients walk the notes line by line. Some want to talk next steps and where to submit. Some want an hour of industry talk with someone who reads for a living. It's your hour. I've done all three.

A PDF of your script, emailed to Kate@kategaulke.com once your read is booked. If there are specific questions you want answered (is the world clear, does the ending land), include them. I'll make sure to address them in the notes.

Coverage works best when you've taken the draft as far as you can on your own. If you're mid-draft, stuck, or staring at a true first draft, a free consult is the better first move. I'll tell you straight if this is the wrong moment to invest in a deep read.

No. I read every script personally, and your work stays between us.

Odd lengths happen. Email me the page count at Kate@kategaulke.com and I'll point you to the right option before you commit to anything.

Give your script the read it deserves.
